What happens
A man named Ted Lacono finds a dead man beneath the Jefferson Bridge, with a checkbook hidden in the victim's hat. The checkbook shows a balance above $104,000, and Ted becomes fixed on the money. The Whistler series, from 1947-05-05, is broadcast on Signal Oil's radio program. Ted sets out to learn the dead man's identity and to forge his signature, first questioning the apartment manager at the Briar Cliff Apartments and then visiting a woman named Harriet Stark. Their plan to draw on the account takes shape as tension between them grows.
