What happens

Edgar Merkel, a schoolteacher who has long wished for excitement, rents a seaside cottage at Cape Defiance for the summer, along with a maid named Flora. His wife Edith is taken to the boathouse, where the tide runs strongly out to the cove. Edgar returns alone to the cottage at 18 Bowden Lane, where Flora and the caretaker Hiram see only his wife's coat. Edith's brother Freddie is suspicious of Edgar's plans. The Whistler series aired on May 12, 1947, and this episode opens with the Signal Oil program.

A cottage at Cape Defiance, including 18 Bowden Lane and a boathouse over a tidal cove, and a city house in the early summer of 1947.

Characters: Edgar Merkel, Edith Merkel, Flora, Freddie, Hiram, Mr. Robinson, Sheriff

Listen for: The sheriff's questions and the letters Edith is said to have written from the Cape.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
