What happens

Frank Ferguson, a private investigator, is hired by gambling boss Duncan McKay, who has received a letter threatening his life. Ferguson learns that two others, hat-check girl Julie Wilson and hardware clerk Albert Dobbs, received similar letters. A third recipient, Geno Brofelli, is found dead after falling from a window, and the letters appear to be linked to McKay's past. The transcript ends before the full resolution of the mystery is revealed.

San Francisco and San Mateo, California, 1948

Characters: Frank Ferguson, Duncan McKay, Julie Wilson, Albert Dobbs, Jim Slade, Geno Brofelli

Listen for: McKay's questioning of Albert Dobbs about his past, and the moment Dobbs names a street in Los Angeles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
