What happens

Alfred Smithers, a dull and unhappy husband, grows tired of his wife Gracie and begins to think about how he might be rid of her. After he forgets to pick up the murder novels she asked him to fetch, she quarrels with him, and Gracie is later found dead of arsenic poisoning. Sergeant Jellaby questions Alfred about the suicide note and his whereabouts, while the neighbours Molly Applegate and Henry Small take notice of his behaviour. At the inquest, the coroner rules the death a suicide, but Alfred remains uneasy as the insurance man presses him with questions and Molly and Henry both act strangely around him.

London, England, in the years after the war, in the Smithers' home and the surrounding neighborhood, including a corner pub and a fog-bound street

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
