What happens

Ellen Hargrove, a wealthy widow recovering from a heart attack, lives in a Victorian house outside town with her devoted housekeeper, Mrs. Merton, and her nephew Wendell Robinson, who stands to inherit her fortune. When Dr. Stone announces that Ellen will recover after all, Wendell's plans are threatened. Soon Ellen discovers that many of her checks have been altered from small amounts to large ones, and the household begins to suspect one another. The Whistler narrates these events, drawing listeners into a tense web of greed, suspicion and deception in the house.

A great Victorian house just outside a small town, and the town itself

Characters: Ellen Hargrove, Mrs. Merton, Dr. Stone, Wendell Robinson, Lil, Mr. Leary

Listen for: The moment Ellen discovers the altered checks, and the scene in the bedroom that follows

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
