His wife Helen dislikes Laurie, and Charles finds himself drawn to her gentle manner and her odd, watchful look. As Helen presses to dismiss her, Charles grows increasingly attached to Laurie and begins to consider how he might be free of his marriage. The Whistler series aired on the Signal Oil program on November 21, 1948, with John Hoyt, Loretta Philbrandt and Mary Lansing in the cast.

A coastal English village and the Belden house on a cliff road outside London, late 1940s.

Listen for: Charles's growing attachment to Laurie and the tension with Helen over whether to keep the housekeeper.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
