What happens
Philip Adams, a bank employee who has just fled with two hundred thousand dollars, is chased by police along a shoreline road. Injured and hunted, he climbs a wall and slips into a darkened estate, where a new secretary, Miss Wyatt, greets him as its owner, Willard Crane. The Whistler's Nightmare, from the Signal Oil program, first aired on November 14, 1948. Adams must keep up the pretence while he waits for his ankle to heal, and he begins to learn more about the man he is impersonating.
A shoreline road and a wealthy estate near a coastal town, with the main action in the house during a night and the following day.
Characters: Philip Adams, Miss Wyatt, Willard Crane, Evans, Lieutenant Haskell
Listen for: Adams slipping into Crane's house and posing as its owner, and Miss Wyatt's growing suspicion of him.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
