What happens
Morley Carr, a schemer who lives by his wits, befriends Sam Wilson, a talkative stranger in an Omaha bar who boasts of a quarter million dollars. When Sam is found dead in his hotel room, Morley realizes the money has vanished and that a woman with black hair was seen leaving. He follows her from Omaha to San Francisco, where she checks into a hotel and begins meeting people about a large sum connected to the missing fortune. Morley pursues her relentlessly, taking on a series of risky dealings and deceptions as the trail leads toward a valuable prize.
