What happens

Joe Brill, convicted of murdering his wife Martha, waits in his prison cell for execution at four o'clock the next morning. His attorney, Eddie Moore, is trying to find Fred Barnes, the neighbor who could support Brill's account, and to win a stay of execution. Brill combs through the trial transcript and finds that Corinne Jeffers, a former sweetheart, gave testimony that may have been false. As the hours pass and the tower clock keeps time, he waits for news from his attorney, who has gone to question Jeffers.

A prison cell in a West Coast city, where Joe Brill waits on death row, with a view of the big electric clock on the tower of the mercantile building.

Characters: Joe Brill, Eddie Moore, Corinne Jeffers, Fred Barnes, Martha Brill, Nancy Walters, Mrs. Bronson

Listen for: Listen for the shift in Brill's hopes when he finds the dates in the trial transcript, and for the news brought by the guard late in the day.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
