What happens

On New Year's Eve, Professor Malcolm Dunn walks home from the library and meets his student Mitch Crandall, who has quarreled with her date Jerry Hayes. Mitch confesses that she is in love with him, and the professor worries that gossip about the two of them could damage his career. After he walks her home and helps her climb through a window into her apartment, Mitch is shot. The next morning the professor reads about the shooting and struggles over whether to go to the police, while a witness named Simpson looks for the man he saw with Mitch.

A university town on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, with its campus, a residential district, and an apartment house.

Characters: Professor Malcolm Dunn, Mitch Crandall, Jerry Hayes, Claire Dunn, Dean Wilson, Lieutenant Franklin, Simpson, Bill

Listen for: The gunshot at Mitch Crandall's apartment and the professor's conversation with Jerry Hayes on the athletic field path.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
