What happens

Martin Forbes, a painter, learns from a police lieutenant that the strangler who killed his wife Margaret has been arrested, though the suspect is near death in hospital. Forbes, who has spent the past year trying to put the murder behind him, is unsettled when Harvey Brandt, the husband of another strangler victim, calls on him and begins to probe him about the rope used in the killings. Forbes's thoughts turn to Adele, a woman who has been abroad for two years. As Brandt's interest in him grows, Forbes must decide how to deal with a man who seems to know more than he should. This episode of The Whistler, a radio mystery series, was first broadcast on August 11, 1948.

A town, mainly Martin Forbes's house and studio, a cocktail bar and a hospital, around the time of the arrest of a suspected strangler.

Characters: Martin Forbes, Lieutenant, Harvey Brandt, Adele, Margaret

Listen for: Pay attention to Harvey Brandt's questions about the rope and to the lieutenant's remarks about the suspect in hospital.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
