What happens
Arnold Stanton, a respectable businessman, has grown determined to kill his dependent wife, Evelyn, and plans an ordinary-looking accident for the morning. The Whistler, a radio anthology series, presents the story, which first aired on August 21, 1946. Arnold goes through his workday while his nerves fray, and a series of unsettling phone calls and visits from a stranger named Haverill make him wonder whether his plan has been discovered. The guide ends with his distress at the office and his uneasy return home, without revealing what he finds or how the story resolves.
A middle-class home and a city office in the 1940s, over a single Monday.
Characters: Arnold Stanton, Evelyn Stanton, Miss Roberts, Richards, Mrs. Bronson, Weston Haverill, Sergeant Cook
Listen for: Listen for Arnold's growing nervousness during the workday and the unexpected phone message from Evelyn.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
