What happens

Tom Redick, passed over for a promotion that goes to his coworker Charles Fremont, plans to kill Fremont in a staged car accident at a railroad crossing. He offers Charles a ride home after drinks, and Fremont falls asleep in the car. A transcript of this episode of The Whistler, the radio mystery series, from its 1945 broadcast, the premise is that Redick's scheme appears to go as planned, though a witness and an injured ankle complicate matters. The episode is broadcast as a sponsored program, with Signal Oil Company's commercials included in the recording.

A plant town in the 1940s, with a highway, a railroad crossing, a bus line and a residential street

Characters: Tom Redick, Charles Fremont, Hazel, Larry, Max, Mr. Winston

Listen for: The dropped wrench plan, the bus passenger who recognizes the accident, and Redick's wife Hazel confronting him

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
