What happens

Alice Towers returns to the English village of Wicley five years after her husband Philip vanished, and announces she will live again in their old house by the sea despite warnings from her sister-in-law Mildred, her brother-in-law Jeffrey and the gardener Anthony. Alice finds the grounds ruined by a flood, yet the old cherry tree by the cliff is still in bloom. Villagers whisper that the house is haunted, and Alice grows uneasy as Jeffrey presses her to leave. Their conversations reveal old resentments and unsettling secrets about the past, and the house begins to weigh on her. This episode of The Whistler, a radio mystery series, aired on April 30, 1945.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
