Vivienne Vayne spins spooky songs, vintage horror trailers, sound effects and station breaks, with a bit of history, a fact or two and a terrible joke between them. A Stupid Potato show.
The Night Shift is a free Halloween radio station and daily spooky podcast from Stupid Potato, hosted by Vivienne Vayne, a velvet-voiced vampire who has been staying up late since the silent era. Listen free online, live 24/7, to old Halloween songs, monster novelty records, horror movie music, vintage horror trailers, creepy sound effects and old station breaks, with a bit of history, a fact or two and a terrible joke between them. It is a soundtrack for carving pumpkins, a haunted-house party or a long drive home on a dark October night.
The monster record is an American tradition with a long tail. Sheb Wooley's "The Purple People Eater" topped the charts in 1958, the same year Philadelphia TV horror host John Zacherle cut "Dinner with Drac." Bobby "Boris" Pickett's "Monster Mash" hit number one in October 1962 and has come back every Halloween since. The Night Shift plays those next to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the rockabilly and garage-rock spook records that never charted, and the film music that taught us what fear sounds like, from Bernard Herrmann's Psycho to John Carpenter's Halloween.
Vivienne is an original character, a campy late-night horror hostess in the tradition of the TV creature features: all purrs, wicked winks and double entendres about necks and coffins, never mean and never explicit. Between the records she tells you something about the song or film you just heard. A new half-hour episode of The Night Shift comes out as a podcast every day, made for a commute or a carving session, and the live stream keeps going around the clock for everyone else working the night shift.
