What happens
Suspense presents an adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story The Yellow Wallpaper, broadcast on June 30, 1957. A woman recovering from a nervous depression rents a summer house with her husband, John, a doctor, and her sister-in-law, Jenny. Confined to an upstairs nursery room with yellow wallpaper she finds disturbing, she begins to see a figure moving behind its pattern. Her husband dismisses her fears, and she grows more absorbed in the wall and in the woman she believes is trapped behind it. Agnes Moorehead stars, with Anne Hunter as Jenny and Joe DeSantis as John.
A rented summer house in the country, with a locked upstairs nursery room whose yellow wallpaper dominates the story.
Characters: Woman (narrator), John, Jenny
Listen for: The narrator's growing unease with the wallpaper pattern and the figure she believes is behind it.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
