What happens
Helen Crane, a secretary who lives alone in a large old house, becomes convinced that someone else is living in the upper rooms. Food goes missing, a clock stops and starts again, and a change-of-address card and luggage appear that she did not order. Her doctor, Perry, suggests she is imagining things and urges her to take a vacation. The story is a radio suspense play from the Suspense series, first broadcast on June 16, 1949, starring Agnes Moorhead. Helen's unease grows as her own actions begin to seem unfamiliar to her, and her memory of her household is called into question.
A large old house in a city, and the surrounding street, with Helen's workplace nearby
Characters: Helen Crane, Perry, Jessica, Mrs. Hall, Harry Penning
Listen for: Helen's sudden doubts about what she has done, and the whistling and missing items in the house
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
