What happens

Radio personality Smiley Smith takes a wire recorder into a supposedly haunted clifftop house on the California coast, hoping to prove the property is safe to sell after several suicides there. He arrives with the psychical investigator Dr. Clarence Reed and the real estate agent Charles McDonald, who has offered the house for the stunt. Smith and Reed go inside to hunt for spirits while McDonald waits outside. Strange sounds, a frightened dog, and eerie sensations begin to unsettle the investigators as the night wears on. The Suspense series aired this episode on June 23, 1949, and the transcript does not name its lead actors.

A clifftop house about twelve miles above Malibu Beach, California, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, at night.

Characters: Smiley Smith, Dr. Clarence Reed, Charles McDonald, Mr. Thorpe

Listen for: The eerie sounds in the house and Smith's reactions as the investigation goes on, along with the distinctive wire recorder playback.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
