What happens

Kurt Ormand and his brother Arthur ride out into a first snowstorm on a Nevada ranch to hunt a big black cat that has been killing cattle in the canyon. Old Joe Sam, a local Indian, has warned of a spectral black panther that comes with the first snow. Kurt sets out alone to track the animal after Arthur is attacked, and he finds himself alone in the storm, lost and worn out. The story is part of the Suspense radio series, first broadcast on February 18, 1952, and starring Richard Widmark.

A ranch in Nevada and the surrounding snowy mountain canyons, at the start of winter.

Characters: Kurt, Arthur, Joe Sam, Gwen, Ma

Listen for: Kurt's shifting sense of direction in the storm, and what he hears in the cave.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
