What happens

Sally Skinner, a wealthy woman, lures her husband to the Johnson House on a mountain road and shoots him outside a window, then arranges the scene to look like an outside attack. Sheriff's deputy Jonathan Brown comes to her house after the death and questions her, and at the inquest he draws the position of the body on a blackboard. The episode is from the Suspense radio series, first broadcast on February 13, 1947, with Agnes Moorhead starring as Sally and William Johnstone as Jonathan Brown. Afterward Sally returns to club life, and a chalk squeak and a shrill modern chamber piece unsettle her. The story is told in a tense, measured way, with its sounds and sudden moments of unease building as Sally's composure is tested.

A mountain road and the Johnson House, a stucco building, and later a quiet town community with a country club and a bridge club.

Characters: Sally Skinner, Jonathan Brown, Mr. Skinner, Mr. Gregg, Mrs. Gregg, Miss Gray, Sam, Turbo

Listen for: The squeak of chalk on a blackboard, the scrape of fingernails on stucco, and the grinding of quarter-tone chamber music.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
