What happens

Lydia Haskell, a woman living alone in a large house on the edge of town, orders an expensive bronze casket from a mortician and asks him to hold it for three weeks, claiming she will die. Her younger sister Ellie lives with her and seems fragile. Lydia's manner toward Ellie grows tense as old resentments between the sisters surface. A policeman later visits to ask why a woman would order a casket for herself. This is the Suspense radio play The Sisters, broadcast on December 9, 1948, with Rosalind Russell as Lydia and Lurene Tuttle as Ellie.

A large three-story frame house on the outskirts of a town, in the late 1940s.

Characters: Lydia Haskell, Ellie Haskell, Mr. Don Brothers, the undertaker, Miss Haskell (the policeman's visit)

Listen for: The tense exchanges between the sisters in the evening parlor and the policeman's visit to Lydia.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
