What happens

A newspaperman and a police sergeant in a rough London district pursue a murderer who strangles his victims with strong, white hands. The strangler has already killed several people, including a worker and his wife on Casper Street, and the sergeant notices the same unnamed reporter appearing wherever he goes at night. The sergeant and the reporter discuss what sort of man the killer might be, and the district grows fearful. This Suspense play, first broadcast on December 2, 1948, stars Claude Rains and Vincent Price in Anton Leeder's production, adapted from the story The Hands of Mr. Ottermole.

A poor London district of narrow streets, lodging houses and market stalls, at night and in the fog.

Characters: Sergeant Eyre, Newspaperman, Mr. Wybrow, Mrs. Wybrow, Sergeant Smithers, Constable Joiner, Peterson

Listen for: The sergeant's account of the strangler's footsteps and the reporter's theory about what kind of man the killer might be.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
