What happens
Dupin, a Paris investigator, is called in when the body of Marie Rogier is found in the river. The prefect of police asks him to help identify the killer of the young perfumery worker. Dupin questions her employer, Monsieur Beauvais, and the lodging-house keeper, Madame Rogier, about her disappearance and about Jacques Saint-Eustache, her intended. A witness at a tavern describes Marie leaving with a dark-complexioned young man on the Sunday she vanished, and a search of the riverside woods turns up her belongings. Dupin argues that a gang did not commit the crime and sets out to find the man she met. The episode is part of Suspense, first aired on February 7, 1960, and is adapted from the story by Edgar Allan Poe.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
