What happens
In Paris in 1842, the prefect of police asks the detective Dupin to help solve the murder of a young woman found drowned in the river. Her clothes and jewelry suggest she was once well known, and her body bears marks of a violent struggle. Dupin begins by questioning Marie Roget's mother, employer and fiance, learning that she left home on a Sunday and never arrived where she said she was going. Witnesses describe her with a dark stranger and a rough crowd near a riverside tavern, and clues found by the water seem to point to a gang of miscreants. Dupin, however, begins to doubt that account and sets out to reason through what did not happen. The story is adapted from Edgar Allan Poe's tale, broadcast on Suspense with Cornell Wild in the lead.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
