What happens
Three climbers attempt to reach the summit of an unclimbed Himalayan-style peak, which the transcript describes as the East Glacier route at 22,000 feet. Team members John Hodyack, Bob Thomas and Eldridge are chosen to make the assault. On the way up, a rope breaks while Norman Perucci is climbing, and Perucci is lost into a crevasse. Eldridge is then unsure whether to continue, and the surviving climbers push higher through the thin air and bad weather. The series is Suspense, first broadcast on March 16, 1953, and the lead actor is John Hodyack, with Ben Wright as Eldridge.
A high mountain expedition on the East Glacier, with camps climbing up to about 26,000 feet, during the spring climbing season.
Characters: John Hodyack, Bob Thomas, Eldridge, Norman Perucci, Gaines, Feldman, Harry, Manton
Listen for: Pay attention to the rope and how Eldridge explains the break, and to the decisions the climbers make at each camp as the weather changes.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
