What happens

A writer returns to a remote railway cutting where she spent childhood afternoons watching trains, and meets the signalman who keeps the lonely post there. He is troubled by a figure he has seen standing by the red signal light at the mouth of the tunnel, waving its arm and calling out warnings. The signalman has begun to tell her what he has witnessed at the post, and the writer takes an interest in his disturbing account. This is a dramatization of Charles Dickens' short story The Signal Man, presented on the Suspense series, first broadcast on March 23, 1953, with Agnes Morehead starring.

A remote railway cutting with a signal post and a tunnel, near a village; the signalman's shack beside the tracks.

Characters: Agnes Morehead as the writer, Joseph Kearns as the signalman

Listen for: The signalman's account of the figure at the red signal light and the warnings it gives.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
