What happens

Miss Leonora Plim runs a boarding house for young actresses, where her cat Lady Susie is believed to bring them luck. She hires George Smith as handyman, but he and the cat dislike each other. After Diane Carville wins a stage role, she is found dead in her room, and the police suspect George. Later, Jane, another boarder, also dies after success, and the story follows Miss Plim's growing unease as she watches the house and its residents.

A boarding house for young actresses in an old brownstone, with a cellar room used by the handyman, in a city during the 1940s.

Characters: Miss Leonora Plim, George Smith, Diane Carville, Jane, Lady Susie

Listen for: Pay attention to Miss Plim's calm remarks about the girls' success and the cat's reactions to George, which may hint at who is responsible for the deaths.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
