What happens

Raymond, a broke racing gambler, answers an advertisement for a driver and travelling companion for an automobile trip to San Francisco. The employer, Walker Hendrix, claims to be an Englishman, and as they cross the country by car, Raymond hears him talk at length about London. In Chicago Raymond finds a letter in Hendrix's portfolio about a large inheritance, and a long-shot plan begins to form in his mind. The story follows Raymond's growing ambitions and the tense journey west with the man he is planning to take advantage of.

New York, Chicago, and a road trip from Salt Lake City across Nevada to San Francisco, around 1946.

Characters: Raymond, Walker Hendrix, Tommy, Miss Andrews

Listen for: Pay attention to the way Raymond keeps testing Hendrix with questions about London, and to the letter from the law firm in Hendrix's portfolio.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
