What happens
In 1888 London, during a series of murders attributed to a killer known as the Avenger, Ellen and Robert Bunting rent a room to a quiet, reserved lodger named Mr. Sleuth, played by Robert Montgomery. The Bunting household is struggling financially, and the new lodger's payment comes as a relief. Mr. Sleuth keeps to himself, makes peculiar requests, and shows an unusual dislike of women, which begins to unsettle Ellen. Her stepdaughter Daisy returns home, and her admirer Joe Chandler, a policeman, shares news of the Avenger's latest crimes. Meanwhile Ellen notices strange details about the lodger's habits and possessions, and her suspicions begin to grow. The episode is from the Suspense series, first broadcast on February 14, 1948.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
