What happens

Dr. Gideon Fell, a philosopher and expert in crime, looks into the case of Helen Barton, who has been convicted of shooting Philip Gayle. Found in the condemned cell on the eve of her hanging, Helen insists she cannot remember how she came there or who Philip Gayle is. Colonel Andrews, the prison governor, has doubts of his own about her guilt, though he insists the evidence is clear and that Herbert Gayle, Philip's brother, saw her fire the shot. Fell presses him on whether the case has been properly weighed before the execution. This is the Suspense series, with Sidney Greenstreet in the lead role, first broadcast on February 9, 1943.

A prison in England in December, centred on the condemned cell and the governor's office on the night before an execution.

Listen for: Helen's claim that she cannot remember the shooting, and the doubts Dr. Fell raises about the verdict.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
