What happens
Archibald Spiller, a middle-class Englishman living on a small country estate with his servants, faces trouble from his former associate Sam Goach, who arrives demanding money and presses his claims over the household. Spiller's guests, including his neighbour Rosalind Digby, gather for dinner and bridge while the garden fountain runs. Tensions rise between Spiller and Goach as the evening wears on, and Spiller's affairs become increasingly strained. This is the Suspense radio play The Fountain Plays, broadcast on November 23, 1944, with Charles Laughton in the lead role.
A country estate in England, with a garden, a fountain, and a house where a cook and a manservant work.
Characters: Archibald Spiller, Sam Gooch, Rosalind Digby, Masters, Elizabeth, Ronald Proudfoot, Inspector Frampton
Listen for: The sound of the fountain and the tension in the conversations between Spiller and Gooch.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
