What happens

Sophronia Winters, a sixty-year-old woman vacationing in St. Petersburg, Florida, meets Hiram Johnson, a man from Green Harbor, Maine, and the two marry soon after. Hiram takes her north to a deserted resort hotel in Maine, where a painting of a murderous woman hangs in the lobby. Sophronia keeps a diary of her growing unease in the empty house, where Hiram seems to be preoccupied with a dead sister-in-law. This is an episode of the radio series Suspense, first broadcast on August 10, 1958, with Mercedes McCambridge in the lead role. The diary unfolds in the isolated house as her situation becomes increasingly frightening.

St. Petersburg, Florida, and a deserted resort hotel in Green Harbor, Maine

Characters: Sophronia Winters, Hiram Johnson, Joe Forsyth, Daphne Forsyth

Listen for: Hiram's odd remarks about his dead sister-in-law, and the sound of the harmonium playing the same hymn downstairs

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
