What happens

Saphronia Winters, newly widowed and eager for romance, arrives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and begins a diary. She meets Hiram Johnson, a hotel owner from Maine, who quickly proposes and marries her. Together they travel to his grand, empty hotel in Green Harbor, Maine, where Hiram shows her a portrait of his late sister-in-law, also named Saphronia. Strange remarks and an unsettling atmosphere grow as Saphronia senses that something is wrong. The Suspense series, broadcast on CBS in 1943, features Agnes Morehead and Ray Collins in this Lucille Fletcher story.

St. Petersburg, Florida, and the deserted hotel in Green Harbor, Maine, in the early 1940s

Characters: Saphronia Winters, Hiram Johnson

Listen for: Hiram's odd reactions to the portrait and the hotel, and the gradual shift in Saphronia's mood as she grows uneasy

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
