What happens

Steve Hadley, a condemned man on death row, looks back on how he came to be there. Two years earlier, after a payroll robbery, his partner Murph shot their accomplice Joe in a boxcar, and Steve was left holding the gun when police arrived. Acquitted at trial, he takes a job at a newspaper arranged by reporter Lori Ware, who has sympathized with him in print. Steve is worried as the story continues, and Lori's investigation brings him fresh trouble. The episode of Suspense, first broadcast on May 10, 1945, stars John Garfield.

A state penitentiary death row, with flashbacks to a payroll robbery aftermath, a freight yard, a newspaper office, and a city apartment

Characters: Steve Hadley, Murph, Joe, Lori Ware, Harry Singles, Mr. Gearly

Listen for: Steve's narration as he recounts the boxcar shooting and his life afterward

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
