What happens
Julia Powell, who turns 23 soon, lives with her guardians Harvey and Laura Lyons in the old San Francisco house left by her late father. Her father's will makes clear that the inheritance depends on her sanity, and she learns her mother died in an asylum after the same birthday. Julia becomes fixated on a painting in her bedroom showing a man with a black scarf about to attack a girl in a chair. A visiting doctor, Dr. Barrow, offers her advice, and Julia begins to believe the figure moves and that footsteps come from the storeroom above. The episode ends with the question of whether Julia is losing her mind or being deceived.
A dark, musty old house in San Francisco, with a large bedroom hung with pictures, around the time of Julia's 23rd birthday.
Characters: Julia Powell, Harvey Lyons, Laura Lyons, Dr. Barrow
Listen for: Julia's growing certainty that the painted figure moves, and the footsteps from the storeroom above her room.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
