What happens

Walter Gage is a private investigator whose former employer, Mrs. Penrodock, has lost a string of pearls and needs them recovered before her husband learns that the necklace has been sold and copied. Gage is pointed toward a large, forceful man named Henry Eichlberger, a former employee who once tried to kiss Gage's fiancee, Ellen McIntosh. Gage visits Eichlberger's shabby hotel room and begins a tense series of confrontations with him and with a local underworld figure named Scandidi, who runs the Blue Lagoon. This is the Suspense episode Pearls Are a Nuisance, first broadcast on April 19, 1945, starring William Bendix and Alan Jocelyn.

Los Angeles, California, in the 1940s, including a seedy hotel, a Chinese laundry building, a downtown nightclub called the Blue Lagoon, and a jewelry company.

Characters: Walter Gage, Ellen McIntosh, Henry Eichlberger, Mrs. Penrodock, Scandidi, Roger Gallimore

Listen for: Gage's dry, witty narration and the quick exchanges with Eichlberger, whose blunt and unexpectedly courteous manner keeps the tension light.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
