What happens

Danny, a page boy, works at a country house in the forest near the village of Sheppey and becomes involved with Mrs. Bramson, a wealthy and domineering old woman. Her niece, Olivia Grey, is unsettled by his presence, and a woman from the neighbouring house has vanished, prompting police and a Scotland Yard man to search the woods around the cottage. Danny is charming and evasive, and the household grows uneasy as suspicion gathers around him and the strange visitor. This episode of Suspense, broadcast on 27 March 1948, adapts Emlyn Williams's play Night Must Fall, with Robert Montgomery as Danny and Dame May Whitty as Mrs. Bramson, with Heather Angel and Richard Nash also starring.

A small rambling English country cottage surrounded by dense forest, far from the nearest village, in the countryside of England.

Characters: Danny, Mrs. Bramson, Olivia Grey, Hubert, Dora, Inspector Bell

Listen for: Listen for Mrs. Bramson's sharp remarks about Danny and the policemen searching the garden, and the tense conversations between Danny and Olivia as the household's suspicions grow.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
