What happens
Miss Rhodes, a woman living alone in a penthouse on the eighteenth floor of an office building, believes that Tom Nixon, a man convicted of murdering her mother, has escaped from prison and is working as the night elevator operator in her building. She testified against him ten years ago, and he swore revenge in court. Warden Graves insists Nixon died in prison, and Miss Rhodes is shown his grave and personal effects. Later, alone in the elevator with the night man, she grows increasingly frightened as the lights go out and the car stops between floors.
A state prison and an office building in New York City, around 1959
Characters: Miss Rhodes, Warden Graves, Tom Nixon, Gordon Graves
Listen for: The night man's voice and his unsettling remarks in the stalled elevator
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
