What happens
Suspense presents An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, broadcast on July 19, 1959, with Vincent Price in the lead. During the American Civil War, Peyton Farquhar, a Southern planter, stands on a railroad bridge in northern Alabama with a noose around his neck, awaiting execution by Union soldiers. As he falls through the timbers, he awakens in the water, his mind racing through memories of a visit from a Confederate soldier, a conversation with a stranger in a shack, and his escape through a swamp toward home. The episode follows his desperate flight and the visions that haunt him along the way.
Northern Alabama during the Civil War, including a railroad bridge over Owl Creek, nearby farmland, a swamp, and a country road.
Characters: Peyton Farquhar, Union Captain, Union Sergeant, Union Lieutenant, Jeff
Listen for: Listen for the moment Farquhar drops from the bridge and the sound of the rope breaking, which sets up his escape.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
