What happens

Captain Gottlieb Walker commands the deep-sea tug Alphabet on a crossing from Liverpool to Boston, and he orders every task on the ship carried out in alphabetical order. First Officer Marshall finds the captain's manner and his orderly, photograph-filled cabin unsettling. Shortly after the voyage begins, the wireless operator Abercrombie vanishes from the decks, and the crew begins to fear the captain. Marshall must decide how to respond as the ship presses on through rough seas.

Aboard the deep-sea tug Alphabet on the North Atlantic, sailing from Liverpool, England, to Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 1940s.

Characters: Captain Gottlieb Walker, Mr. Marshall, Higgins, Abercrombie, Butterfield, Chadwick, Alec McTavish, Harvey Goodroom

Listen for: Pay attention to the captain's insistence on alphabetical order and his cabin, which is arranged in the same orderly way, and to the crew's growing fear as men disappear one by one.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
