What happens

Matthew Ebermann, a lonely and ugly man who works at a plant, has long been mocked for his appearance. At a masquerade he meets a stranger, and later he begins to court Sally, a cheerful blonde from the plant, who is drawn to attention and company. Their marriage brings only noise, crowds and resentment, and Matthew grows bitter as Sally's restlessness and attentions to other men continue. The episode is part of the Suspense series, first broadcast on August 28, 1947, and it is performed by its regular cast.

A factory plant and a white cottage on the outskirts of town, in an unspecified American city around the 1940s.

Characters: Matthew Ebermann, Sally, Hazel, Lefty, Eddie

Listen for: Matthew's sad and bitter voice as he speaks about being ugly, and Sally's chatter about flowers, parties and her bracelet.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
