What happens
Boaz Negro, a blind cobbler in a small town, lives quietly with his son Manuel until a stranger, Campbell Wood, rents a room in his house. Later that night, a sack of government money vanishes, Wood is found dead in the ashes of Negro's burned house, and Manuel is missing. Negro is questioned by Chief Charlie Sipper, who suspects his son. The story is told as Negro's own account, recounted years later as he sits in his shop. The original broadcast aired on July 12, 1945, on Suspense, with J. Carrol Naish in the lead role.
A small town, with a cobbler's shop and a house behind it, in the years around a murder.
Characters: Boaz Negro, Manuel, Campbell Wood, Charlie Sipper, Miss Evans, Mr. Rugg
Listen for: The blind cobbler Boaz Negro identifies people by their footsteps, and the sound of footfalls and silence carries much of the tension.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
