What happens

Phoebe Ridge is dead within months of her whirlwind marriage to Martin Pierce Etheridge, and her sister Lucinda Howe is convinced he caused it. Lawyer Aaron Jenkins handles the will, which leaves the estate largely to Martin. Lucinda confronts Martin, who insists her fall down the stairs was an accident and that he was in the drawing room at the time. Over the following weeks Martin courts Lucinda with flowers, plans for the grounds, and a proposal of marriage. Lucinda begins to soften toward him, and both discuss mutual wills to be witnessed by the servants, Agatha and Mary.

A country house known as Howe Manor, in the years after the death of Phoebe Ridge.

Characters: Lucinda Howe, Martin Pierce Etheridge, Phoebe Ridge, Aaron Jenkins, Agatha, Mary

Listen for: Listen for Martin's careful reassurances to Lucinda, and for the slow change in her manner toward him over the course of the story.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
