What happens

Thomas Higgins, a private detective, takes a job at Neely's department store to uncover the employees who hung a dummy of its owner, the richest man in the world, JP Merrick, in effigy. Higgins befriends Mary Jones, who is in love with Joe O'Brien, a restless employee who is drawn into the staff's grievances. At Coney Island, Higgins and his companions run into trouble with a sergeant and an officer, and Joe's protests escalate into a clash with the law. The Lady Esther Screen Guild Players present this radio adaptation of the RKO film, starring Guy Kibbee as Merrick, Donna Reed as Mary Jones and Van Johnson as Joe O'Brien. The broadcast original air date was August 12, 1946.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
