What happens

Lucky Jordan, a New York racketeer, is drafted into the army and goes absent without leave after a series of schemes to avoid service. His loyal associate Slip Moran tries to keep his operations running, while a service club worker named Jill Evans becomes involved in the affair. A briefcase holding secret army papers passes between hands, and the men pursuing it grow increasingly dangerous. This is the first act of the Screen Guild Theater's 1944 radio adaptation of the Paramount film, starring Alan Ladd, Marjorie Maine, Barbara Britton and Harry Bansell, broadcast on January 31, 1944.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
