What happens

Henry Van Cleve, recently deceased, appears before Satan in hell and seeks admission by recounting his life. He describes his youthful romances and his first meeting with Martha, a bookshop clerk he pursues until she agrees to marry him. Their marriage brings a child and years of tension, with jealousy and a disputed jewelry bill driving them apart. Henry is cast as a charming but troublesome husband, and Satan weighs whether his sins are serious enough to earn him a place below. Walter Pidgeon, Susan Hayward, and John Carradine star in this 1945 Screen Guild Theater broadcast of the 20th Century Fox comedy. The episode aired May 7, 1945.

Hell, and flashbacks to Henry and Martha's life together in New York.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
