What happens

Honest John Calhoun runs a saloon in a frontier Alaskan town and is working on a deal with Sam Slade, who has come north to join him. Calhoun sends for singer Lettie Candles and her father, and the arrival of the performers stirs trouble with Steve Atterbury, a young pianist, and Calhoun's former flame, Belle. Steve's private past is a source of tension, and Lettie's father begins to suspect him. Sam and Calhoun also hatch a scheme involving a professor's weather reports and the town's gold dust. Based on the Screen Guild Theater radio series, this episode first aired on February 12, 1945, starring Dinah Shore, Bob Burns, Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick.

A frontier town in Alaska during the Yukon gold rush, centred on a saloon and a newly opened bank.

Characters: Sam Slade, Honest John Calhoun, Lettie Candles, Steve Atterbury, Belle, Mr. Candles, Professor Salisbury, Marshal Fellford

Listen for: Sam Slade's rambling, folksy asides and the bursts of song from Dinah Shore's character.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
