What happens
Newland Archer and his grandmother Nancy look through an old photo album, and Nancy asks about her relative Ellen Mingott, a countess who returned to New York. Ellen comes home from Europe after leaving her husband, and society gossips about her, while her grandmother Mrs. Mingott stands by her. Newland, now engaged to May Welland, finds himself drawn to Ellen during her visits and their private meetings. The story is part of the Screen Guild Theater series, first broadcast on December 18, 1944, starring Merle Oberon and John Payne. The episode is based on Edith Wharton's novel and follows the Lady Esther Screen Guild Players' adaptation of the film The Age of Innocence.
Old New York society, late 19th century, with scenes at the Mingott house, Ellen's new home, and a train platform.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
