What happens

Staff Sergeant Danny McCullough, a flight engineer, is assigned to fly supply missions into Berlin during the 1948 airlift, when the Soviets have cut off the city's roads, railways and canals. Hank Kowalski, a ground-controlled approach operator, is posted to the same work at Tempelhof Field. McCullough is picked out by a German woman who presents him with a gift on behalf of the women of Berlin. When Danny gets a day pass to visit the city, he and Hank look for Frau Burkhardt, and Danny's uniform is taken for repair. The broadcast covers the first part of the story. The program is an adaptation of the 1948 film The Big Lift, starring Paul Douglas and Edmund O'Brien, aired on the Screen Director's Playhouse series on 1951-01-18.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
