What happens

Jim Blandings, an advertising executive, and his wife Muriel decide to buy an old Connecticut farmhouse and turn it into their dream home. Their plans quickly grow costly as the old house is torn down, a new one is planned, and an unexpected mortgage and well-digging problems add to the expense. Jim's frustration with the project strains the household, and the family begins to wonder whether building the house was worth the trouble. The story is part of the Screen Directors Playhouse radio series, presented in July 1949 with Cary Grant as Jim and Frances Robinson as Muriel.

Mid-century New York and rural Connecticut, including an apartment in New York and an old farmhouse property in Connecticut.

Characters: Jim Blandings, Muriel Blandings, Bill Cole, Gussie, Mr. Desander, Mr. Tussan, Mr. Hackett, Mr. Sims

Listen for: Jim's growing frustration with the costs and problems of building the house, and the exchanges between Jim and Muriel about their home.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
